The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has announced that two fixtures from Matchday four of the 2024/2025 season will be played under floodlights. This marks a significant move for the league, enhancing the viewing experience for fans and adding a new dimension to the matches. According to a letter signed by the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo will host the encounter between Akwa United and Sunshine Stars at 5:30 pm on September 28, 2024. The following day, September 29, the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan will see Shooting Stars face off against Heartland FC, also under floodlights, at 5:30 pm.
This development is seen as a step forward in the league’s efforts to modernize the NPFL and create more engaging matchday experiences. Playing under floodlights is expected to attract more spectators and provide a unique atmosphere, enhancing the appeal of the league. Alongside these matches, Ikorodu City FC will take on Nasarawa United at 3:00 pm on September 28, while Rivers United and Enyimba FC are scheduled to play at 3:00 pm on September 29. Other fixtures on Matchday four are set for the standard 4:00 pm kickoff time on September 29.
The decision to host matches under floodlights is part of the NPFL's broader strategy to elevate the profile of the league and improve fan engagement. As more clubs upgrade their facilities to accommodate evening games, the league aims to provide fans with high-quality football experiences comparable to those in top leagues around the world. This move is expected to draw larger crowds and increase the league's visibility both domestically and internationally.
