Rivers United Claim Top Spot as Plateau United and Katsina United Shine in NPFL Thriller

Rivers United climbed to the top of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table with a 2-0 victory over Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan. After a goalless first half, Aniekeme Okon and Ndifreke Efiong found the back of the net in the 51st and 65th minutes, securing all three points for the former champions. With this win, Rivers United now sit comfortably at the top with 17 points from seven matches.

In Jos, Plateau United triumphed over Remo Stars in a thrilling 3-1 contest. Franklin Ebuka set the tone with an early goal in the 4th minute, and later completed his brace in the 71st minute. Sadiq Abubakar added another goal for Plateau United in the 64th minute, while Remo Stars pulled one back through Malik Jabbar in the 83rd minute. Despite the late effort, Plateau United dominated the match from start to finish.

Meanwhile, resurgent Ikorodu City managed to secure a valuable point on the road after a 1-1 draw with Heartland FC. Chukwuma Agor’s goal in the 66th minute canceled out an earlier strike by Salau Yusuf for the Lagos-based club. The result showed Ikorodu City's fighting spirit as they continue to battle their way up from the bottom of the table.

Katsina United edged out Akwa United with a narrow 1-0 win in their Matchday 7 fixture, securing all three points at home. Akwa United's struggles continue as they remain in the relegation zone, failing to pick up crucial points in recent matches. Katsina United’s victory brings them to 11 points, keeping them in fifth place.

Rivers United lead the NPFL table with 17 points, closely followed by Remo Stars with 15 points. Enyimba FC, Plateau United, and Katsina United occupy third, fourth, and fifth positions with 14, 11, and 11 points, respectively. At the bottom, Ikorodu City, Akwa United, and Bayelsa United are in relegation danger, sitting in the 20th, 19th, and 18th spots, respectively, with just 5 and 6 points each.
