Rivers United head coach, Finidi George, has expressed disappointment over his team’s inability to secure all three points in their match against Sunshine Stars. Despite taking the lead in the game, Rivers United were held to a 1-1 draw after allowing Sunshine Stars to equalize just before the final whistle. Finidi George attributed the outcome to missed chances, which he believes could have sealed the win for his team.
In his post-match comments, the former Super Eagles coach highlighted that his side played with the intention of winning, but they failed to capitalize on key opportunities. “It was a good game, we played to win,” Finidi stated. “In the first half, we missed a couple of chances. We would have won the game, if we scored the game would have been different.” Despite the frustrations, Finidi acknowledged that the performance overall showed positive aspects, but it was ultimately the missed opportunities that left them with just a point.
Rivers United managed to score the opening goal but failed to maintain their lead. The equalizer came from a free kick late in the game, which Finidi felt could have been defended better. “We later got a goal and we tried to hold on but the free kick, we should have done better, they got a free header we should not have been like that,” he explained. The defensive lapse allowed Sunshine Stars to steal a point, despite Rivers United’s dominance.
Although the result was a draw, Finidi George remains confident in his team’s abilities, stressing that they should have secured the win. “A draw is not bad, but looking at the game, I think we should have won the game 2-1,” he said. The coach’s frustration stems from the belief that his team’s performance was good enough to earn all three points, but missed opportunities and defensive lapses ultimately led to the shared result.
Looking ahead, Rivers United will need to focus on converting chances and tightening their defense in future matches. With a strong attacking and defensive lineup, the Pride of Rivers will aim to bounce back and avoid similar mistakes in their upcoming fixtures as they continue their quest for a top spot in the NPFL.
