Rivers Angels head coach, Tosan Blankson, admitted his side was forced to adapt to Ibom Angels' physical style of play during their dramatic 2-1 victory in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) season opener on Wednesday.
The South-South Derby lived up to its billing, with Ifeoma Ikenokwalu scoring the decisive goal in the 78th minute. The match also featured two own goals: Helen Daniel's third-minute error gave Rivers Angels an early lead, while Joy Michael leveled for Ibom Angels in the 18th minute.
Speaking after the match, Blankson highlighted the challenges his team faced. "Ibom Angels were more physical, and that disrupted our rhythm," he said. He also noted his players' anxiety, explaining it was their first competitive outing together this season.
Despite the hurdles, Blankson expressed satisfaction with his team's performance. "The win is as good as playing Super Six already. The girls have done well," he added.
Rivers Angels will now prepare for their next challenge, an away clash against Naija Ratels in Abuja.
