The Nationwide League One (NLO) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) virtually on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, resolving key decisions to enhance the league's operations.
In his address, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, commended the NLO Board and Secretariat for their efforts in managing the league. He assured continued support from the NFF to ensure the league maintains high standards and promotes Nigerian football positively.
Key Resolutions from the AGM
1. Adoption of Stadium League Format
The Congress reaffirmed the adoption of the Stadium League format, which has been in place since 2021. The single-leg format was retained due to its success in eliminating walkovers, reducing controversies, and ensuring compliance with league regulations.
2. TV-Friendly Venues for Matches
To boost visibility, NLO matches will be played in stadiums suitable for television broadcast. The Secretariat will determine venues based on those approved for professional league matches by the NFF.
3. Live Streaming for Increased Exposure
The Congress urged the NLO Secretariat to expand live streaming coverage of matches, which will enhance exposure for clubs and improve player marketing opportunities.
4. More Tournaments for Clubs
To ensure clubs play more matches during the season, the NLO Secretariat will organize additional tournaments, providing players with more competitive opportunities.
5. Approval of NLO 10-Year Master Plan
The Congress reaffirmed support for the NLO's 10-year master plan, first submitted to the NFF in 2021. The plan focuses on league expansion, post-football career opportunities for players, and increased profitability.
6. Increment in Centre Participation Fees
Due to economic conditions, the Congress approved an increase in the centre participation fee from ₦200,000 to ₦300,000. However, the registration fee remains at ₦300,000, covering medical assessments, player registration, insurance, and management costs.
7. Season Kickoff and Registration Timeline
The 2025 NLO season will commence on Friday, April 11, 2025. Clubs will have ample time to recruit players, especially those lost to transfers during the January window. Registration begins Thursday, January 30, and closes Friday, March 28, 2025. Clubs failing to complete registration will face sanctions.
8. Facial Recognition System for Player Registration
In a move to prevent player poaching and double registration, the Congress approved the installation of a facial recognition system on the club registration portal, ensuring the integrity of player records.
These resolutions mark a significant step in strengthening the structure of grassroots football in Nigeria, with the NLO reinforcing its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and player development.
