In a major move to boost women’s football in Nigeria, the Oyo State Government has officially launched Pacesetter Queens FC, the state’s flagship female football team. The unveiling took place on Tuesday, 22 July 2025 at a press conference led by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Miss Wasilat Adegoke.
Speaking at the event, Adegoke praised Governor 'Seyi Makinde for his strong backing and vision in promoting gender inclusion through sport. She noted that the club's creation was a direct result of the administration’s ongoing efforts to develop sports and empower women.
“This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the backing of His Excellency,” Adegoke said. “His commitment to empowering female athletes through solid funding and goodwill has been remarkable.”
The Commissioner presented the club’s official logo and introduced its leadership team, describing Pacesetter Queens FC as a project of purpose and professionalism. She called on the public to support the new team, which she said embodies Oyo State’s reputation for excellence.
According to Adegoke, the club’s modern logo symbolises strength, unity and ambition, and reflects the team’s readiness to compete on national and international levels. The coaching and management team includes Akinwunmi Obajimi as Head Coach, Damilola Olaitan Badmus as First Assistant Coach, Zaccheaus Aderoju as Second Assistant Coach, Lateef Lukman as Physical Trainer, Foluso Ajayi as Goalkeeper Trainer, and Miss Grace Towobola as Welfare Officer.
Adegoke stressed that the technical team’s experience will help shape top talent and raise the club’s competitive standard. She also announced a one-month open trial for aspiring players. After the trials, the club will receive a dedicated team bus, and training will commence at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex and Olubadan Stadium, both already prepared for use.
Notable football figures such as former Nigerian international Mutiu Adepoju and the Chairman of the Oyo State Football Association, Oba James Odeniran, were present at the event. Their attendance signalled broad support from the football community for the new initiative.
With its launch, Pacesetter Queens FC is expected to strengthen the presence of Oyo State in Nigerian women’s football and contribute significantly to Governor Makinde’s vision for inclusive sports development.
