Katsina United sit 10th in the Nigeria Premier Football League, a fair reflection of a side still searching for consistency but showing clear signs of structure and promise. The Changi Boys are tactically flexible, although variations of the 4-3-3 remain their default shape.
In goal, Katsina United boast one of the league’s most reliable duos. Zalli Abdullahi, formerly of Doma United and Enyimba, has been impressive between the sticks, while Joshua Enaholo provides capable cover. Together, they form a goalkeeping unit that ranks among the strongest in the NPFL this season.
The defence blends experience with energy. Philip Ogwuche Clement is first choice at left-back, with Ismaila Nasir Muhammed as backup. Despite combining for close to 170 NPFL appearances, neither has found the net. On the opposite flank, Innocent Arigu has stood out. Developed at Si14 FC Keffi and largely unnoticed during a quiet spell at Sunshine Stars last season, Arigu has emerged as an attacking full-back with confidence and drive.
At centre-back, the partnership of Ejike Uzoechi and Ahmed Kabeer Yallilo has exceeded expectations. Uzoechi brings physicality and grit, while Yallilo, a former right-back, adds composure in possession. Moses Adikwu and Chigozie Michael Ihejiofor have also featured, though Ihejiofor’s limited appearances have raised questions over fitness or possible trials abroad.
In midfield, club legend Usman Barau continues to anchor the side. The veteran has now reached 250 NPFL appearances, with just three goals to his name, underlining his purely defensive role. Alongside him, Christopher Richards has rediscovered his best form since arriving from Bendel Insurance. Richards has represented six NPFL clubs, but rarely with the authority he now shows in Katsina colours.
Their presence allows Azeez Olamilekan Falolu to flourish. The playmaker enjoys freedom higher up the pitch and has been the team’s standout performer. Mubarak Sani, popularly known as Shahada, offers dependable cover across midfield.
Out wide, the picture is less convincing on the left. Elijah Akanni, David Onovo and Bashir Usman have all struggled to impose themselves despite strong reputations. On the right, Abubakar Sadiq Auwal remains the preferred option. The former Bayelsa United winger has carried over much of last season’s form and continues to pose a consistent threat.
Leading the line, Uche Collins has been decisive. The powerful forward has scored five goals and is one of the team’s top performers, alongside Falolu. Collins has recently been partnered by Jamilu Yusuf, nicknamed Onga, a January signing from third-tier Junior Danburam FC. Raw but fearless, Yusuf has already scored twice and adds unpredictability to Katsina United’s attack.
With goals now coming from multiple sources and a settled spine taking shape, Katsina United look capable of pushing higher up the table if they maintain momentum.
