Plateau United’s season is drifting towards a relegation battle, with the Peace Boys currently sitting 19th on the Nigeria Premier Football League table. Despite a familiar 4-3-3 shape, the Jos-based side look unbalanced across key areas of the pitch.
Goalkeeping has been a contest between two young options, with John Amah and Favour Bala rotating between the posts. Neither has yet stamped clear authority on the role, leaving the position unsettled at a critical stage of the campaign.
In defence, experience is limited. Veteran Mustapha Abdullahi, formerly of Lokomotiv Plovdiv in Bulgaria, remains the preferred left-back, while Harrison Ebah usually operates on the right. Jonathan Davou and Mubaraq Usman provide alternatives, with Usman offering an additional threat through his long throws.
The central defensive pairing of Wisdom Ndon and Biweribo Tarabino shows promise but lacks top-flight experience, making them one of the least seasoned centre-back combinations in the NPFL. Amietimi Enewarikpemi is the third-choice option and is also relatively inexperienced.
Midfield instability has been one of Plateau United’s biggest problems this season. Frequent rotation, largely driven by injuries, has prevented cohesion. Kazeem Adeyanju and Chinemerem Collins Ugwueze have been the standout performers, while Pam Mafeng, Jonathan Okechukwu and Gift Osadebe have also contributed.
Adeyanju, formerly of Inter Lagos, has impressed with his size, athleticism and energy. However, the midfield lacks a clear leader and attacking presence. Mafeng remains the only midfielder to have scored a goal this season, highlighting the absence of creativity and penetration from central areas.
Up front, Gafar Saka leads the line and remains a striker with obvious physical potential. Like many forwards in the NPFL, his game is raw and powerful but short on finesse and consistent finishing. Vincent Temitope, often deployed on the left wing, has emerged as the team’s most influential attacker.
With the return of Nenrot Silas, Temitope could shift to the right flank or even operate as a striker. Gideon Monday offers pace and directness on either wing but struggles with consistency, while Yusuf Tsamage Abdullahi provides another option on the right after his remarkable five-goal performance for Kano Pillars in the 2023–2024 season.
Despite their league position, Plateau United’s attack has shown flashes of quality. The more pressing concerns lie in goal, defence and midfield, areas that must be strengthened if the club is to avoid slipping further into danger.
Top scorers so far are Gideon Monday with five goals, followed by Wisdom Ndon and Vincent Temitope on two apiece.
