Nigeria's Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, has shared his thoughts following the updated group draw for the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.
The revised draw, prompted by Côte d'Ivoire's withdrawal as hosts, placed Nigeria in Group B alongside Tunisia, Kenya, and Morocco. Originally, the Flying Eagles were grouped with Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco.
Reacting to the new group, Zubairu downplayed concerns about facing tough opposition, stressing that all teams in Africa are now competitive.
“I believe it’s time we stop viewing some teams as stronger while considering others weaker. There are no minor opponents in Africa; it all depends on your level of preparation,” he said.
He emphasized that preparation, not perceived strength of opponents, determines success. “When the first draw was announced, we referred to it as the 'group of death'. Now, with Tunisia and Kenya joining Morocco, it’s the same reaction. Which country do we want to face that isn’t tough?” he asked.
Zubairu also highlighted the progress made during their recent three-week training camp in Katsina, noting improved team cohesion and tactical discipline.
“From what we observed in Katsina, the team has made tremendous progress in blending and adapting to a more advanced approach to matches,” he stated.
Now back in Abuja, the seven-time African champions will depart for Egypt this week for an eight-day final preparation phase ahead of the tournament.
The 24th edition of the U20 AFCON will be held from April 27 to May 18. Nigeria qualified after winning the WAFU-B regional championship and aims to secure one of the four available spots for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, scheduled for September 27 to October 19.
