Chairman of Abia Warriors Football Club, Coach John Sam Obuh, held a special thanksgiving service on Sunday to express gratitude for his journey as the head of the Umuahia-based Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side.
The event, held at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Lugbe Parish in Abuja, drew family members, friends, football stakeholders, and well-wishers.
In his address, Obuh thanked God for the strength to lead the club and acknowledged the support of key figures who encouraged him to take on the role. He specifically appreciated the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, and legal luminary Chief Umeh Kalu (SAN).
“I am deeply grateful to the Almighty for this journey and to everyone who has supported me, especially Governor Alex Otti, the deputy governor, the commissioner of sports, and Chief Umeh Kalu SAN. Their confidence in me is what has kept me going,” Obuh said.
The former Golden Eaglets coach also praised the church community for their spiritual and moral backing, which he said contributed to Abia Warriors’ historic qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup—their first-ever appearance on the continental stage.
“I want to thank this church for standing by my family and supporting Abia Warriors in prayers. Your love and encouragement have played a role in our team reaching the continental stage,” he added.
Delivering the sermon, the Rt. Rev. Nicholas Agwu, moderator of the presbytery, commended Obuh’s humility, integrity, and Christian values.
“Coach John Obuh is not just a leader in football but a man of great humility and fear of God. He could easily serve as a pastor. His character speaks volumes,” Rev. Agwu said.
The service ended with joyful celebrations as congregants joined the Obuh family in giving thanks and praying for more success for Abia Warriors in their upcoming continental campaign.
