Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, will resume training camp in Abuja this weekend ahead of the rescheduled WAFU B U-20 Boys Championship, set to kick off on 10 July in Accra, Ghana.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu confirmed the team's return to camp after a two-week break. The squad was earlier dismissed following the indefinite postponement of the tournament, which was initially scheduled for last month.
“With the new date confirmed, we are focused on getting the boys ready for the task ahead,” Zubairu said. “We’re bringing the players back to camp this weekend to resume full training.”
Group Stage Challenge: Nigeria Opens Against Hosts Ghana
Nigeria has been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Ghana and Benin Republic. Group B comprises Niger, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
The opening match on 10 July will see Nigeria face Ghana in what has been dubbed the “Jollof Derby”—a highly anticipated regional clash that is expected to draw significant attention.
The Flying Eagles will play their final group match on 13 July against Benin Republic. Their progression to the semi-finals may depend on the outcome of the Ghana vs Benin fixture on 16 July, unless they secure two victories in their first two matches.
To guarantee a place in the last four, the Flying Eagles must defeat both Ghana and Benin Republic. Any slip-up could see them relying on goal difference or head-to-head records to advance.
The team is expected to travel to Accra shortly before the start of the tournament.
