Shooting Stars head coach, Gbenga Ogunbote, has shared his thoughts following his side’s 2-2 draw against Ikorodu City in their opening match at the ongoing Eko International Cup pre-season tournament on Sunday.
Ogunbote, speaking after the game, emphasised the developmental purpose of pre-season tournaments, stating that winning at all costs should not be the focus.
"It wasn't a bad game. Pre-season tournaments are meant to enable the coaches to see their players. If you want to look at a team that will win at all cost, then the purpose is defeated," he told 3SC media.
The experienced tactician highlighted the importance of evaluating all available options during the tournament, including the club’s younger players.
"The coaches needed to be bold enough to make use of what they have, to see the right or the wrong. You can see the goalkeeper that kept today, David Olagunju. I didn't change him, and that's my junior professional. If he is going to be part of the senior team, we need to see him, peradventure register him, then we will be able to see if he can take it up from there."
Looking ahead, Ogunbote expressed optimism about improved performances in the next fixture.
"As for the tournament, we can get better in the second match," he concluded.
