South Africa midfielder Gabriela Salgado suffered a serious injury during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final clash against Nigeria, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for Banyana Banyana.
The unfortunate incident occurred during a tense and physical encounter that saw the Super Falcons book their place in the final. Salgado was forced to leave the field and was immediately taken to hospital for further evaluation.
Dr Thulani Ngwenya, Chief Medical Officer of the South African Football Association (SAFA), confirmed the severity of the situation.
“Gabby sustained a serious injury during the game and was rushed to the hospital immediately after the incident for further assessment and management,” Dr Ngwenya said.
He added that the full extent of the injury is still being determined, and a detailed update will be issued once all medical assessments are completed in Morocco.
