CAF Releases New Rules for 2025/26 Champions League Preliminary Round Draw

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced detailed guidelines for the 2025/26 CAF Champions League preliminary round draw, setting clear rules to ensure structure and fairness in the competition.

First Leg Hosting Rules
According to CAF, ranked teams (1st placed) will host the first leg of their fixtures. Unranked teams will also enjoy the advantage of playing the opening leg at home.

Same Country Clash Rule
In cases where the draw for the Second Preliminary Round produces a tie between two clubs from the same country, CAF will intervene to prevent domestic clashes at this stage. One team will be moved to the next available fixture, and another opponent will be drawn.

Exempted Teams
Seeded clubs that are exempted from the First Preliminary Round will host the decisive second leg in the Second Preliminary Round.

The rules reflect CAF’s continued effort to improve organisation and maintain competitive balance as Africa’s top club competition develops.
