Plateau United goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka has formally responded to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following his suspension over allegations of insider betting.
In a letter dated 5 August 2025, signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi, Adeyinka was informed of his immediate suspension from the league. The suspension followed an ongoing investigation into claims made by Plateau United FC that the player was involved in betting activities during the 2024/2025 season.
The NPFL stated that the decision was also influenced by Adeyinka’s refusal to sign a contract with a prospective new club, Shooting Star FC, due to a clause allowing immediate termination in the event of betting implications. The league cited Article 15.5 section B of its Framework and Rules, which prohibits players from engaging in betting and outlines punishments under section C.

Responding to the allegations, Adeyinka denied wrongdoing and called for a fair hearing involving all relevant parties, including Plateau United FC, Shooting Star FC, and Sunshine FC. He explained that he had sought clarification on the betting-related clause in the Shooting Star FC contract, requesting that any judgment be based on concrete evidence rather than rumours or public opinion.
According to Adeyinka, the Sporting Director of Shooting Star FC amended the contract to reflect this request, and he agreed to the revised terms pending his agency’s approval. He also addressed his previous contract termination by Plateau United FC, noting it followed a match against Sunshine FC in which he was on the bench and did not play.
Adewinka revealed that, despite receiving a letter from the NPFL ITC Department on 6 August instructing him to respond, he has yet to be invited for further discussion. He added that the Secretary of Plateau United FC assured him that no official letter had been sent to the NPFL ITC Department regarding the allegations.
The goalkeeper urged the NPFL to convene a hearing to establish the facts and protect his rights as a professional player.
The NPFL has stated that Adeyinka’s registration could be reinstated if the investigation finds him not guilty.
