St Éloi Lupopo earned a battling 1–1 draw against Al Hilal Omdurman in Lubumbashi on Sunday, keeping Group C wide open after two matchdays in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
Al Hilal made a strong start and took the lead after 12 minutes when Abdelraziq Omer reacted quickest in the box to finish from close range. Lupopo struggled to settle and captain Issama Mpeko was cautioned before the break as frustration mounted.
The Congolese side emerged from half-time with renewed energy, using fresh legs to push the Sudanese champions back. Petrus Aprocious was booked as Al Hilal absorbed increasing pressure.
Lupopo were eventually rewarded in the 79th minute when Ramos Kashala tucked in after a fortunate break of the ball inside the area.
Al Hilal continued to pose problems on the counter, but two visiting players went into the referee’s book as they worked to protect their point. Mika Miche was also cautioned in stoppage time as tensions rose, yet neither side could find a decisive goal.
Friday’s goalless draw between MC Alger and Mamelodi Sundowns leaves Sundowns top of Group C on goal difference with four points, level with Al Hilal. MC Alger have two points, while Lupopo sit bottom with one.
Both teams will return to continental action in January. Lupopo will hope to build on their improved second-half display, while Al Hilal aim to extend their unbeaten start.
