The Nigeria Women’s Football League has sanctioned Ekiti Queens following the attack on match officials during their home match against Edo Queens in Ado-Ekiti. The league described the incident as a serious breach of its safety and conduct rules.
NWFL Media Director Samuel Ahmadu issued an official statement on Thursday announcing the penalties and stressing that the league would not tolerate threats to referee safety or the integrity of its competitions.
Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi condemned the assault and reaffirmed the league’s commitment to discipline and professionalism. She said the attack was unacceptable and a clear violation of established regulations.
A preliminary review of reports and video evidence showed that Ekiti Queens failed to provide adequate security, failed to control their supporters, and created an unsafe environment that led to the assault.
As punishment, the club has been fined ₦2.5 million for several breaches of league rules. The NWFL also ordered the team to play their next three home fixtures at a neutral venue, the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
Shabi added that the sanctions serve as a warning to all clubs. She emphasised that the safety of match officials remains a priority and that any act of violence or intimidation will attract strict consequences.
The league urged clubs, state football associations, and matchday organisers to reinforce their security systems as the 2025–26 season progresses.
