El-Kanemi Warriors currently sit 11th in the Nigeria Premier Football League table. The Maiduguri-based side have shown remarkable continuity this season, with six regular players retained from last year’s squad. The team operates a classic 4-3-3 formation.
The only new signing in goal is Hakeem Otuyiga, who arrived from Akwa United. Veteran Ghanaian goalkeeper Ibrahim Iddrisu serves as his backup.
On the left flank, Usman Abbas, formerly of FK Metta in Latvia, holds the regular left-back position, challenged by David Bukar Damboana. Bilal Yakubu guards the right-back spot, closing in on 150 NPFL appearances. Usman Audu, now with local rivals DMD FC, provides depth.
Central defence is shared mainly by Godspower Akekoromowei, signed from Inter Lagos FC, and Abdul Azeez Yusuf, who once played for ABS FC. Other options include Jibrin Bakura and Murtala Ibrahim Dagbo. The defence appears to lack a clear leader, and new central defenders are likely to be signed during the mid-season transfer window.
The midfield boasts the team’s star player Musa Zayyad. He is the engine of the team, excelling both as a ball-winner and distributor. His influence allows teammates Daddy Abdullahi Abdulrahman and Ismail Mukhtar to thrive. Abdulrahman is having an excellent season with five goals already. This midfield trio ranks among the best in the NPFL. Ibrahim Salisu, known as “Saleh Nasara,” is pushing for more game time.
Samaila Bello and Umar Al-Amin occupy the wings. Both have had quieter seasons so far. Al-Amin shows flashes of brilliance when in form and has untapped potential. Youngster Ismail Risilanu is challenging for a place on either wing.
Up front, Emmanuel Jonas was once tipped for a European career but has seen his progress stall. However, his recent form has been promising with four goals this season. Tosin Olawale, signed from Shooting Stars SC, is the main alternative striker.
