Enyimba FC, once the undisputed giant of Nigerian football, currently languishes in mid-table obscurity, sitting 8th in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). Their transfer policy this season is a curious blend of experienced players from various levels, including the Nigeria National League (NNL), alongside promising youngsters from grassroots football.
The club favours a 4-3-3 formation. In goal, Kelvin Ogunga, once a backup at Bayelsa United and relegated last season with Heartland FC, has held the position well but is not a standout. However, recent returns to form from other goalkeepers and the comeback of Asibe Nathaniel from injury, alongside the addition of veteran goalkeeping coach Emeka Obi, have stabilised the position and improved performances.
At left-back, Solomon Onome Ogberahwe, formerly of Denmark’s Jammerbugt FC, competes with Odeh Paul from Rivers United and Chukwuemeka Emmanuel Nwokeji from Remo Stars. On the right, newcomer Joel Ezra, signed from grassroots football, impresses with power and modern full-back qualities, while veteran Christian Molokwu provides experience. Unwana Asoquo is also recovering well from injury.
The central defence started with Peter Afolayan and Mohammed Hussaini as first choices, but Pascal Eze has recently stepped up to lead the backline. While these defenders bring experience, the defence lacks flair and remains somewhat basic in style.
Enyimba’s midfield shows clear improvement from last season. Abubakar Salmanu, previously a backup at El Kanemi, has surprised many with strong defensive performances. Bright Emmanuel Ihionu and Ndedi Henry hold defensive midfield roles, while Toyosi Quadri, Kalu Nweke, and Chinedu Ufere drive the attack. Nweke stands out as the most effective attacker, and young Issah Mohammed is pushing for more playing time.
Upfront, the squad rotates frequently. Joseph Abiodun and Joseph Atule fill the left wing, though Atule appears past his peak. Ezekiel Edidiong shines on the right wing or as a striker in a 4-4-2 setup and is arguably the club’s best player this season alongside Afolayan and Nweke. Stanley Dimgba has become an impact substitute. New signing Onyebuchi Augustine Nwaorisa from Edel FC could be one to watch as the season progresses.
Strikers John Bassey, relegated with Heartland last season, struggles to convert chances, while Michael Abraham Chidera, signed from Ozalla Football Academy, has been prolific with six goals in just six starts and nine substitute appearances.
