Warri Wolves FC have quietly settled into life back in the Nigeria Premier Football League, sitting 13th on the table and performing slightly above expectations for a newly promoted side from the South-South.
There is little romance about this Warri Wolves squad. It is built more on muscle than finesse, with hard work and physical commitment defining their approach. Playing in a 4-3-3 system, the Seasiders rely on organisation and resilience rather than flair.
In goal, Joke Elvis Efevwerha has recently reclaimed the number one shirt. The goalkeeper was impressive during the promotion-winning campaign but lost his place earlier in the season to veteran Vincent Edafe before fighting his way back.
The defence has been the most stable area of the team. Emmanuel Bakare is the preferred option at left-back, while veteran Michael Adenodi and Godwin Oham have rotated on the right. At centre-back, Tejiri Emonena, signed from Sunsel FC, has formed a dependable partnership with Chisom Ogbu, who arrived from Abakaliki FC. Their solidity has kept Warri Wolves competitive in most matches.
Captain David Joseph anchors the side from defensive midfield, providing balance and leadership. Ahead of him, Shemaye Justice Amatesiro and Jude Ebhohon offer energy and aggression, covering ground and breaking up play. Seth Mayi, one of the most experienced players in the squad with over 100 NPFL appearances, and newcomer Bassey Bassey from Dakkada FC provide depth in midfield.
Up front, goals have largely come from Evwierhurhoma Igbunu. The striker is the club’s top scorer with five goals and remains central to their survival hopes. Ezekiel Oroh, who has previously played in the UAE and India, offers a capable alternative. Abdulateef Yusuf, outstanding in the NNL, has struggled to replicate that form on the left wing, allowing the more experienced Othuke Egbo to claim the role. On the right, Chisom Orji has been the standout wide option, while Ademola Adebambo brings versatility with experience from six different NPFL clubs.
Warri Wolves may not excite, but their physical edge and discipline have kept them afloat. If goals continue to arrive from Igbunu and the defence maintains its shape, the Seasiders could grind their way to another season of top-flight football.
