In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Edo Queens Football Club has emerged as the dominant force in the CAF Women's Champions League Zone B qualifiers. The team has finished atop their group with a flawless record, underscoring their exceptional performance on the continental stage.
Yussuf Alli, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission and an accomplished Olympian, has expressed profound satisfaction with the team's achievements. His commendation comes on the heels of Edo Queens’ impressive 1-0 victory over Omnisports Etincelle. This win was crucial, securing their top position in Group B and ensuring their advancement to the semifinals.
Alli’s enthusiasm was palpable as he spoke about the team's debut in the CAF Women's Champions League. “I congratulate our girls. They have been spectacular since they began the CAF Champions League preliminaries in Côte d'Ivoire,” Alli remarked. He emphasized that the performance of the Edo Queens has brought considerable pride to the state and noted that Governor Godwin Obaseki is keenly interested in their continued success. “Our Governor is pleased with their results and performance so far and has urged them to maintain their momentum and bring the cup to Benin,” Alli added.
The Edo Queens’ journey through the qualifiers has been nothing short of impressive. They began their campaign in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, where they secured a commanding 5-0 victory over AS Garde National from Niger Republic. This was followed by a decisive 3-0 win against Hasaacas Ladies of Ghana, reinforcing their position as the team to beat in the competition.
Their final group stage match against Omnisports Etincelle of Burkina Faso was a testament to their consistency and resilience. Joy Jerry’s first-half goal was all that was needed to secure the win and cap off an unbeaten run through the group stages.
As the qualifiers progress, Edo Queens now look forward to their semifinal clash against D'Abidjan. The match is set to take place on Tuesday at the Stade De La Paix in Bouaké. The outcome of this fixture will determine their path to the final and their quest for continental glory.
The upcoming semifinal presents a pivotal moment for Edo Queens, and the support from the Edo State Government, along with the team’s stellar performances thus far, has set a strong foundation for their continued success in the tournament.
