As preparations intensify for the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, newly promoted Nasarawa United is set to launch their campaign in the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-Season Tournament. The tournament, which begins today, Tuesday, August 20, 2024, in Jos, Plateau State, marks a significant opportunity for Nasarawa United to solidify their position as formidable title contenders.
The Solid Miners, who clinched the championship of the 2nd edition of this tournament in 2019 by defeating El-Kanemi Warriors FC 1-0 in the final held in Kano, are participating in the 4th edition of the pre-season competition. They have been placed in Group D, where they will compete against Kwara United, Kano Selected FC, and Ajester FC.
Nasarawa United’s opening match is scheduled for 8:00 AM today at the New Jos International Stadium, where they will face Ajester FC. This match will be followed by the official opening game of the tournament between Plateau United and Barau FC at 4:00 PM.
The tournament will span one week, with Nasarawa United’s subsequent group stage fixtures scheduled as follows: against Kano Selected FC on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 4:00 PM, and against Kwara United on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 4:00 PM.
In addition to Nasarawa United, several other top NPFL teams are participating in this pre-season tournament, including defending champions Niger Tornadoes FC, Lobi Stars FC, and Kano Pillars FC.
According to Abuhuraira Dahiru, the General Coordinator of the Tournament, the competition is set to offer a high level of football action, featuring quarter-finals and semi-finals before the final match scheduled for August 30, 2024.
Looking ahead to the official NPFL season, which begins on August 31, 2024, the NPFL Board, led by Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, has announced that Nasarawa United will host Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan on September 8, 2024, at the Lafia City Stadium. This opening fixture is expected to be a significant test for Nasarawa United as they seek to make their mark in the new season.
