Optima Energy Gold Cup: Ojo Olorunleke Sponsors Best Goalkeeper Award

The 12th edition of the Optima Energy Gold Cup preseason tournament is currently underway at the Remo Stars International Stadium and FC Ebedei Stadium. This year, the tournament introduces a special accolade for goalkeepers, sponsored by Ojo Olorunleke, a prominent Super Eagles player now representing Al Merreikh in Sudan.

Olorunleke, who recently signed a two-year contract with Al Merreikh, has chosen to sponsor the Best Goalkeeper Award in recognition of the crucial role goalkeepers play in football. In a statement to the Optima Energy Gold Cup media channel, Olorunleke emphasized the importance of goalkeepers in the sport.

"Goalkeepers are often underappreciated, despite being integral to a team's success," Olorunleke said. "This award aims to highlight their contributions. The goalkeeper who keeps the most clean sheets, makes outstanding saves, and displays exceptional skill during penalty shootouts will be honored with this award."

The tournament, renowned as one of the nation's premier preseason competitions, is heating up as it transitions to its knockout stage. This Thursday's matches promise to deliver high-octane action. At 8 a.m., defending champions Beyond Limits will face FC Ebedei in a thrilling encounter. Later, at 3 p.m., the Shooting Stars of Ibadan will challenge Beninese side Association Sportive de la Vallée de l'Ouémé (ASVO) FC in what is expected to be a competitive clash.

The Optima Energy Gold Cup not only serves as a vital preseason fixture but also provides a platform for emerging talents and seasoned professionals to showcase their skills. The introduction of the Best Goalkeeper Award highlights the tournament's commitment to recognizing excellence in every position on the field.
