Following the maltreatment of Nigeria's Super Eagles in Libya, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued an official response. The Nigerian contingent, including players and technical staff, faced delays at Al Abraq Airport, where they were held for more than 12 hours. As a result, the team has chosen to return home and not participate in the 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya.
Libya has come under intense scrutiny for its treatment of the Nigerian side since Sunday, raising serious concerns about sportsmanship and fair play. The delays, combined with other hostile actions, left the Super Eagles unable to proceed with their match preparations.
CAF’s Competition Director, Luxolo September, addressed the situation through UK-based journalist Osasu Obayiuwana. "CAF is aware of this matter and is in touch with the teams in Libya," he confirmed. However, details of any potential action or resolution were not immediately provided.
With the Super Eagles deciding to withdraw from the match, their return to Nigeria marks a strong statement against the unfair treatment they experienced. The team and its officials could not gain entry into the country, further complicating their stay and affecting their willingness to continue.
This incident has not only raised questions about the safety and respect for visiting teams in Libya but also calls for CAF to take decisive action to prevent similar occurrences in future competitions.
