Rivers United coach Finidi George admitted his players showed signs of nervousness during their 1-0 victory over Kano Pillars in an NPFL match on Sunday in Port Harcourt. The Pride of Rivers managed to secure a hard-fought win against a determined Sai Masu Gida side, but Finidi noted his team’s hesitance in building on their early lead.
Speaking after the game, Finidi expressed satisfaction with the result but acknowledged the challenges faced by his squad. "We are happy for the victory, which was a difficult game," he said. Despite creating a few chances in the first half, Rivers United struggled to maintain their attacking momentum as the match progressed.
"In the second half, the team was a little bit nervous, trying to hold on to the only goal instead of going for the second," Finidi explained. This cautious approach, he suggested, left the team vulnerable in key moments, as they focused more on preserving the lead than extending it.
Towards the end of the match, Rivers United found themselves under pressure as Kano Pillars pressed for an equalizer. "At the tail of the game, we pushed back to see how we can preserve the lead," Finidi noted. Despite the tense moments, the team’s defense held firm to secure the three points.
The win propelled Rivers United back to the top of the NPFL table with 29 points from 15 matches, reaffirming their status as title contenders. However, Finidi will likely emphasize the need for his team to maintain composure and capitalize on scoring opportunities in future games.
