NPFL: Akwa United Set for Redemption Mission Against League Leaders Remo Stars

Akwa United will kick off the second half of their 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign with a crucial home match against league leaders Remo Stars at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Sunday.

The Promise Keepers ended the first round of the season in 19th place, earning 19 points from 19 matches, with five wins, four draws, and ten losses. Determined to turn their season around, the club has made significant changes, including the return of Kennedy Boboye as head coach. Boboye, who guided Akwa United to their maiden league title in 2021, replaces former coach Muhammed Babaganaru, who resigned before the end of the first round.

Boboye has been joined by assistant coach Ifeanyi Nwachukwu as they aim to steer the club to a safer position on the league table. The team has also been strengthened with the addition of forwards Uche Sabastine (PSports Academy) and Orji Chisom (Sporting Lagos), midfielders Ogar Sabastine and Samuel Tochukwu (both from PSports Academy), defender Adamu Umar (Sunshine Stars), and the return of right-back Asuquo Etiene from a loan spell at Dakkada FC.

In preparation for the second stanza, Akwa United played three mid-season friendlies, recording a 5-0 win over Immortality Academy, a 3-0 victory against Godswill Akpabio United FC, and a 1-1 draw with Abia Warriors.

Sunday’s clash provides an opportunity for Akwa United to avenge their 2-1 loss to Remo Stars in Ikenne earlier this season. The Promise Keepers have never lost to Remo Stars in Uyo, maintaining dominance in previous encounters. The head-to-head record shows Akwa United with six wins compared to Remo Stars’ three, alongside a single draw.

Strikers Chijioke Alaekwe and Friday Apollos, who combined for nine goals in the first round, will be key to Akwa United’s attack as Boboye seeks a strong start to the second half of the season.

The match will kick off at 4:00 PM and will be streamed live on the NPFL Live App. Updates will also be shared across Akwa United’s social media platforms.
