Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has assured the Super Eagles of Nigeria of a football-friendly environment as they prepare to face the Warriors of Zimbabwe in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo on Tuesday. The governor made this commitment through the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, during the team's first training session at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Sunday.
Welcoming the Super Eagles to Akwa Ibom, Governor Eno commended their hard-fought victory over Rwanda in Kigali. He acknowledged their efforts and urged them to shift their focus to the Zimbabwe encounter, emphasizing the importance of securing maximum points to boost their qualification hopes.
"You made Nigerians happy when you won in Kigali, and that victory is still being celebrated till now. But let me encourage you not to dwell there. That is in the past. Press on for what is to come, which is the game against Zimbabwe, and please, do not be complacent," the governor advised.
He further expressed confidence in Uyo as a stronghold for the Super Eagles, highlighting the state's history of hosting successful national team matches. He assured the players and technical crew of the state government's full support to ensure a favorable atmosphere for another victory.
"Uyo has always been a good hunting ground for the Super Eagles, and I'm sure that will continue on Tuesday and beyond. As a government, we will do everything possible to ensure you get the victory," Governor Eno stated.
The governor also called on Akwa Ibom residents and Nigerians at large to fill the stadium with green and white colors to cheer the team to victory. He stressed the importance of fan support in motivating the players to perform at their best.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, announced an incentive for early arrivals at the stadium. He revealed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) would distribute 500 free jerseys to the first 500 fans to encourage massive turnout for the match.
The Super Eagles currently sit in fourth place in Group C of the qualifiers, with six points from five matches. With only a few games remaining, a win against Zimbabwe is crucial to their chances of securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, known for its world-class facilities, is expected to host a thrilling contest as Nigeria aims to climb higher in the standings. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 PM on Tuesday, March 25, with fans eagerly anticipating a strong performance from the Super Eagles.
