Akwa United have crashed out of the 2025 President Federation Cup following a 5-3 penalty shootout defeat to Kwara United after a 2-2 draw in regulation time at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
The Promise Keepers looked on course for a semi-final spot after racing to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Defender Endurance Ebedebiri opened the scoring from the spot in the 15th minute after Emmanuel Ini was fouled, before Ini made it 2-0 nine minutes later with a curling finish.
Kwara United responded strongly, pulling one back in the 35th minute and leveling the game in first-half stoppage time. The second half produced chances for both sides but no goals, forcing a penalty shootout.
While Ebedebiri, Abson Mare, and Ibrahim Akande converted for Akwa United, Osoba Kabir's miss proved costly as Kwara United scored all five of their penalties to book a place in the semi-finals.
Akwa United, two-time champions of the competition, will now focus on securing their top-flight status in the Nigeria Premier Football League.
