The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has issued a stern warning against the unauthorised use of its name by corporate bodies and individuals organising awards without proper approval.
NPFL Chairman, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, expressed the league’s displeasure following the recent announcement of the Eunisell Boot Award, which recognised Nasarawa United’s Anas Yusuf with a ₦3.6 million prize for finishing as the top scorer of the 2024/25 season.
While acknowledging the value of such initiatives, Elegbeleye emphasized the need for due process in collaborating with the league.
“The league appreciates schemes that add value, like the proposed payment to Anas Yusuf,” he said. “However, it is not right for any person or organisation to use the name of the NPFL and announce an award without recourse to the asset owners.”
Elegbeleye confirmed that the NPFL is taking legal steps to protect its brand, revealing plans to involve the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
“We are going to use every legal channel to protect our asset from this ambush. These illegal activities must stop once and for all,” he declared.
The NPFL also confirmed it has identified the organisers of the unauthorised award and has issued a warning for them to desist immediately.
“There must come a time when we put an end to impunity, no matter how long it has gone on. This is the time, and we must get things right,” Elegbeleye concluded.
