The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has secured the international allegiance of United States-based striker Chioma Okafor, who has opted to represent the Super Falcons despite being eligible to play for Malawi.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) confirmed on Thursday that the 20-year-old University of Connecticut forward, born in Malawi to a Malawian mother and Nigerian father, has turned down their approach and committed her future to Nigeria.
Okafor, who plays for the University of Connecticut Huskies in the NCAA Division I, has been making waves in the American college football scene with her clinical finishing and intelligent movement in the final third. She was one of the standout performers in the 2024 NCAA season, registering 12 goals and 5 assists in 18 appearances.
In recognition of her potential, the NFF has extended an invitation to the talented forward to join the Super Falcons camp ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. She is expected to arrive in Lisbon on June 20, where the team will commence its pre-tournament training camp from June 21 to 25.
As part of their preparations, the Super Falcons will play two high-profile friendlies: the first against Portugal in Lisbon, followed by a clash with Ghana’s Black Queens in Morocco.
While the official squad list for the WAFCON is yet to be released, Okafor’s inclusion highlights Nigeria’s intent to blend emerging diaspora talents with experienced internationals as they aim to reclaim continental glory.
