The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major increase in prize money for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with winners now set to receive US$3.5 million. This represents a 75 percent rise from the previous US$2 million awarded at the last edition.
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe confirmed the changes in a statement published on the official CAF website. He described the move as a step towards strengthening local football and increasing the competitiveness of African-based players on the global stage.
The total prize pool for the tournament has also been increased to US$10.4 million, reflecting a 32 percent boost overall. According to CAF, this adjustment is part of ongoing efforts to elevate the status of the CHAN competition and encourage greater investment in domestic leagues across the continent.
“The CHAN is an important competition for the development and growth of Africa-based football players,” Motsepe said. “It will contribute significantly to the global competitiveness of African football” (CAFOnline.com).
The 2024 CHAN will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from 2 August to 30 August 2025. Seventeen teams have already qualified for the tournament, which is reserved exclusively for players who play in their home country’s domestic league.
CAF’s decision to increase the prize money is expected to drive greater interest from fans, broadcasters, and sponsors, while also serving as an incentive for national football associations to invest further in local talent.
