Remo Stars have progressed to the second round of the CAF Champions League after defeating US Zilimadjou of Comoros 1-0 in the return leg of their preliminary tie at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, on Friday.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions secured a 5-0 aggregate win, having claimed an emphatic first-leg victory away from home.
Despite enjoying dominance in the first half, the Sky Blue Stars were unable to convert their chances, with the match still goalless at half-time.
The breakthrough arrived in the 73rd minute when Ibrahim Abubakar’s cross struck a defender’s hand inside the penalty area. Alex Oyowah calmly converted from the spot to seal the win.
Head coach Daniel Ogunmodede’s side will now face South African heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns in the next round, a contest expected to provide a stern test of their continental ambitions.
Elsewhere, Nigeria’s other representatives, Rivers United, remain in the race after holding Les Aigles of DR Congo to a goalless draw away. They will host the return leg at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Sunday.
