We Didn't Approve It: NFF Disowns Press Release Blaming Ekong, Dessers for South Africa Draw

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has distanced itself from a controversial press release that blamed Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong and forward Cyriel Dessers for the team’s 1-1 draw against South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The statement, circulated on Tuesday night by the Federation’s Communications Department, directly criticised the two players for their performances in the Group C encounter at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

However, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi denied that the Federation sanctioned the release. Speaking in a telephone interview with journalist Omofoma Ebare, he expressed disappointment over the match result but insisted that the players must not be singled out.

“It was a painful result, but as a believer, I know that whatever comes is from God,” Sanusi said. “We are not happy, and we apologise to all Nigerians. But I saw the press release the same way everyone else did. The NFF did not authorise anyone to publish such a statement.”

Sanusi stressed the importance of collective responsibility, noting that both victories and defeats must be shared by the entire team.

“We are proud of our players,” he added. “Blaming individuals is not acceptable. When we win, it is a team effort, and when we lose, it is the same. No single player should be held responsible.”

He also praised the contributions of Troost-Ekong and Dessers to Nigerian football, urging respect and unity among fans.

“The two players have contributed significantly to the development of football in Nigeria. They have given their best for the national team, and we must stand by them. It is unfair for them to be singled out.”

Sanusi confirmed that the Federation is investigating the source of the unauthorised release and promised that appropriate action will be taken.

The draw leaves Nigeria in a difficult position in the qualification race. With 11 points from eight matches, the Super Eagles are at risk of missing consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments, having already failed to reach the 2022 edition in Qatar.
