Akwa Ibom’s Bright Start: Sports Commissioner Applauds NNL Teams and Addresses Dakkada Concerns

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, has praised the state’s representatives in the 2025–26 Nigeria National League after they recorded strong victories on the opening weekend in Uyo. He urged both sides to maintain the early momentum and push for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League.

The commissioner gave his commendation after watching Akwa United claim a 2–0 win over Solution FC of Anambra on Matchday One of the new season. A day earlier, he was also in attendance as Godswill Akpabio United produced an emphatic 5–1 victory against First Bank FC of Lagos at the Uyo Township Stadium.

Elder Bassey congratulated both teams and encouraged them to approach the rest of the campaign with discipline, focus, and professionalism. He stressed that earning promotion to the NPFL would be a significant achievement for Akwa Ibom.

“I am delighted with the outcome of the matches involving our teams. As a state, we are proud to see them begin the season with victories. The two teams have demonstrated the true character, spirit, and mentality of the Akwa Ibom person,” he said.

He added that the NNL remains a challenging and unpredictable division, making a strong start essential. He expressed confidence that with fan support and sustained motivation, both clubs can achieve positive results.

The commissioner also encouraged Akwa United and Godswill Akpabio United to reflect the positive values of the Arise Agenda of Governor Umo Eno, noting that the governor continues to inspire excellence across the state.

In a separate development, Elder Bassey met with players of Dakkada Football Club to address the decision of the club’s owners to withdraw from the league. He said available information supports that position, but assured that stakeholders are working tirelessly to resolve the issue. He cautioned against actions and comments that could aggravate the situation.
