Nigeria’s national amputee football team (Special Eagles) opened their campaign at the inaugural West Africa Para Games with a dominant 11–0 victory over Benin Republic on Friday in Abeokuta.
The match, played at the main bowl of the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, saw the hosts take charge from the first whistle. Nigeria scored five goals before half-time and added six more after the restart, maintaining complete control of possession and tempo. Benin Republic struggled to cope with Nigeria’s pace and organisation throughout the one-sided contest.
Fans at the venue were rewarded with an energetic display as the Nigerian team impressed in all areas of play. Benin Republic offered more resistance after the break, yet Nigeria’s sharp finishing kept the scoreboard ticking.
Nigeria had initially been scheduled to face Cameroon immediately after the opening ceremony, but a late adjustment to the fixtures placed Benin Republic as their first opponents. The Nigerians will now meet Cameroon in their next match.
The maiden edition of the West Africa Para Games was officially declared open on Friday by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun. Around 500 para-athletes from across the region will compete in 11 sports over six days, with the National Sports Commission, the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria, and the Ogun State Government ensuring a smooth and well-organised event.
