Niger Tornadoes’ five-game unbeaten streak came to an end on Sunday as Abia Warriors claimed a 2–1 victory at the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna.
First-half goals from Sunday Megwo and an own goal by Chibueze Damian gave the visitors control before Abdulrasheed Shehu Dabai’s effort in the second half restored some hope for the Ikon Allah Boys.
Tornadoes started strongly, breaking through the Abia Warriors defence on several occasions but failed to convert their early chances. Their wastefulness proved costly when Megwo’s clever header beat goalkeeper Ifeanyi Nchekwube in the 38th minute. Moments before half-time, a mix-up in the Tornadoes box saw Damian turn the ball into his own net to double the visitors’ advantage.
Abdulrasheed Shehu Dabai pulled one back in the 54th minute after connecting with Clinton Jephta’s cross, sparking renewed urgency among the home fans. Substitutions followed as Shimagande, Joseph Godstime, and returning midfielder Ahmadu Liman were introduced to push for an equaliser, but the Warriors held firm to secure all three points.
After the match, Tornadoes head coach Majin Mohammed admitted his side may have underestimated their opponents following their recent victory over Kano Pillars.
“I think we were carried away by the win against Pillars,” he said. “We dominated the early stages and had clear chances, but we failed to take them. Abia Warriors capitalised on our defensive mistakes and punished us.”
Despite the setback, Mohammed urged fans to remain patient and continue supporting the team.
“The league is a marathon,” he added. “We still have a long way to go, and we will bounce back when we face Wikki Tourists in Bauchi.”
