Sporting Lagos began their Nigeria National League campaign with a confident 3-1 victory over Osun United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, a ground where Osun United had the upper hand last season.
The hosts wasted no time asserting dominance as Aondona opened the scoring in the third minute. Seventeen minutes later, Unenge doubled the lead, putting Sporting Lagos firmly in control. Despite a goal from Osun United’s Tomiwa Awojobi just before halftime, the visitors struggled to contain the home side’s early pressure.
Osun United fielded a newly assembled squad that included regular goalkeeper Asimiyu Bello and seasoned players Francis Odudu and Adeboye Taiwo. Solomon Boyo, returning to the team, showed promise at the back, but a shaky start proved costly.
The second half saw Osun United introduce Onoja Gabriel, Samuel Udoh, John Olorunda, Sikiru Durotoye, and Musheed Waheed to inject energy and urgency. While the visitors created several opportunities, Sporting Lagos maintained control. Victor Samuel’s composed finish three minutes after the hour mark sealed the win.
Speaking after the match, Osun United chairman Gbenga Ololade expressed disappointment but remained optimistic. “We are not happy with the outcome, but we knew it would not be easy. The boys showed character despite the shaky start. We will regroup and aim to improve soon,” he said.
Osun United will seek to recover from the defeat when they travel to face Solution FC in their next fixture. The team must quickly move past this setback and prepare for a stronger performance.
