At the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna, Niger Tornadoes secured a crucial 2-0 victory against Barau FC to close out the first half of the NPFL season. Despite injury setbacks, the Ikon Allah Boys showed resilience and quality to climb to fifth place on the table.
The match kicked off with both sides pressing hard, and early attempts from Niger Tornadoes hinted at their intent. At the 34th minute, Abdulaziz Dalhatu capitalised on a free kick awarded after a foul on Akintunde Azeez to curl a precise shot into the net. It was Dalhatu’s fifth goal of the season and the breakthrough the home side needed.
Barau FC battled to respond, with a late first-half substitution and a determined spirit, but the Tornadoes defence, led by Sunday Akinmoladun and Ahmed Family, stood firm.
The second half saw Barau briefly threaten, with a potential equaliser disallowed and substitutions made to inject fresh energy. However, Niger Tornadoes controlled much of the game, creating chances to extend their lead.
In stoppage time, super-sub Rickson Mendos took advantage of a scramble in the box to score his third goal of the season, sealing a well-deserved 2-0 victory for the hosts.
Coach Majin Mohammed praised his team’s grit despite the injury woes and emphasised their ambition to maintain momentum in the NPFL.
With 24 goals scored so far, Niger Tornadoes finish the year as the league’s top scorers, setting a promising tone for the second half of the season.
