El-Kanemi Warriors FC Maiduguri secured a vital away victory on Sunday after edging Bayelsa United 1-0 in a Nigeria Premier Football League fixture played at 4.00 pm Nigerian time.
The encounter was played before a packed stadium dominated by Bayelsa United supporters, with a strong turnout of Borno State indigenes also present to cheer the Babagana Umara Zulum Boys.
El-Kanemi asserted control early, with midfielders Zayyad Musa and Ebuka Okoro dictating the tempo and winning key battles in the centre of the park. Their dominance paid off shortly before the interval when Mas’ud Danjuma delivered a precise pass into the box, allowing Sadiq Mohammed to calmly slot home and give the visitors a deserved lead.
Bayelsa United responded after the break, pressing for an equaliser, but El-Kanemi remained disciplined. Goalkeeper Hakeem Otuyiga played a key role from the back, helping the team maintain possession and build play in line with Kabiru Suleiman Dogo’s tactical approach.
The defensive pairing of Abdulaziz Yusuf and Godspower stood firm, repelling repeated Bayelsa attacks, while Zayyad Musa and Ebuka Okoro continued to drive El-Kanemi forward in search of a second goal.
Despite late pressure from the hosts, the Warriors held on to secure all three points, with the contest ending 1-0 in favour of the Maiduguri-based side.
Speaking after the match, head coach Kabiru Suleiman Dogo praised his players’ response following their previous outing.
“Alhamdulillah, after our game against Enyimba FC, we went back to the drawing board to assess our mistakes and make the necessary adjustments,” Dogo said. “The boys responded positively in training and carried that effort into the match.
“I also appreciate our fans for their prayers and constant support. Their encouragement continues to push the team forward.”
Team captain Zayyad Musa echoed the coach’s sentiments, expressing gratitude for the victory.
“I thank Almighty Allah for the win and for an injury-free game,” Musa said. “We promised a victory and achieved it with a lone goal. Even though our fans were not here, I know they are celebrating wherever they are.”
The result hands El-Kanemi Warriors a crucial boost as the NPFL season progresses.
