Wilfred Ndidi, captain of the Super Eagles, has revealed the heartfelt reason behind his goal celebration against Tunisia, which mirrored Nwankwo Kanu’s iconic gesture at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Ndidi scored Nigeria’s second goal in their match after Victor Osimhen had opened the scoring in the first half. It was Ndidi’s first goal for the national team, a squad he has served for over a decade.
The defensive midfielder recreated the famous celebration of Kanu Nwankwo, a Nigerian and Arsenal legend, as a tribute.
“I just remember my dad; my dad always used to talk about Kanu and everything,” Ndidi explained. “So I saw the video, and I said, ‘Oh, I’ll do that one for my dad.'”
With this win, Nigeria became the second team to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament in North America, joining Egypt, who secured their place earlier with a 1-0 win against South Africa.
Nigeria’s next fixture is against Uganda, who have played two games so far, losing to Tunisia and drawing with Tanzania.
