Enyimba FC Technical Adviser Emmanuel Deutsch Gustavo has hailed his players’ resilience following Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Rivers United in an NPFL Matchday 27 clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
In a fiercely contested encounter, Enyimba took the lead in the 28th minute when Abiodun Joseph rose to glance home a well delivered free kick. The goal stunned the home supporters and gave the visitors control for long spells.
Rivers United responded in the 43rd minute through Aniekeme, who restored parity before the interval.
Despite facing a technically organised Rivers United side led by club legend Finidi George, Enyimba remained disciplined and compact throughout the contest.
Speaking after the match, Deutsch expressed satisfaction with his team’s mentality.
“Yes, I think the boys showed good character both in the first and second half,” he said. “It’s just a few days with me, and there are a few areas that need to be taken care of. But I think they showed they can continue to prove themselves.”
The Cameroonian coach admitted there is still work to be done but praised his players for executing the tactical plan, particularly in limiting Rivers United’s threat from wide areas.
“With more work on the training ground, we will show more to the fans,” he added.
Deutsch also acknowledged the magnitude of managing Nigeria’s most successful club and pledged to restore its proud legacy.
“This is a club with a rich history and great achievements. I may not be the best, but I will do my best to bring back the glory days.”
He commended Chairman Nwankwo Kanu and Sporting Director Daniel Eke for their backing since his arrival.
The point in Port Harcourt signals renewed belief within the Enyimba camp as the nine time champions continue their push in the second half of the season.
Enyimba will next face Kun Khalifat FC in what is billed as a new Oriental derby at the Enyimba International Stadium on Sunday.
