Rivers United head coach Finidi George has admitted his side were outclassed after suffering a heavy 4–1 home defeat to defending champions FC Pyramids in the CAF Champions League.
The Nigerian representatives bowed out of the competition on Sunday in Uyo as the Egyptian giants overturned an early setback to secure a commanding victory and seal progression to the next round.
Rivers United started brightly and took control of the opening exchanges, restricting Pyramids’ attacking threat in the first half. However, the momentum shifted after the break, with the visitors exploiting defensive lapses to take full control of the contest.
Speaking after the match, Finidi acknowledged his team’s strong start but admitted they failed to maintain their level.
“We controlled the game and got our goal. We did not give them room to play in the first half,” he said.
The former Super Eagles winger, however, pointed to errors in decision-making and defensive execution as the decisive factor.
“Indecision was our wrongdoing because we made mistakes in tackles, and they were quicker,” Finidi explained.
He further conceded that his players struggled to match the intensity and quality of the Egyptian side in the second half.
“It was difficult for the players to contain them after the break. We lost to a very good team, especially in the second half,” he added.
The result confirmed Rivers United’s elimination from the CAF Champions League, bringing their continental campaign to an end, while FC Pyramids progress confidently to the next stage.
