The Nasarawa State Government has charged Nasarawa United FC and Nasarawa Amazons FC to win their respective league titles this season and secure continental qualification.
The directive was issued by the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, during the final of the 2025 Nasarawa State Governor’s Cup between Karu LGA and Wamba LGA at the Lafia City Stadium on Monday.
Yakubu expressed confidence that both clubs can emerge champions in the Nigeria Premier Football League and the Nigeria Women Football League.
“As a responsible Government, we remain committed to seeing our teams play on the continent, not just to win domestic league titles. We are working day and night to ensure that this ambition is achieved,” he said.
He noted that the clubs possess the quality required to deliver success.
“We have talented players, committed coaches and passionate fans. The ingredients for success are all there.”
The Commissioner added that the government expects excellence following sustained investment in both teams and urged all stakeholders to support the drive for domestic and continental success.
Both clubs are currently well placed on their respective league tables as the season progresses.
Focus on Youth Games and Sports Festival
Yakubu also revealed that preparations have intensified for the forthcoming National Youth Games in Asaba and the National Sports Festival in Enugu.
He disclosed that committees will soon be constituted to coordinate the state’s participation, with the aim of surpassing previous achievements.
“We had a great outing in the last editions and we have learnt important lessons that will guide us in our subsequent outings,” he stated.
According to him, several sporting facilities have been upgraded, while new equipment will be acquired to enhance athletes’ performance.
He confirmed that Governor Abdullahi Sule has approved funds for the renovation of the swimming pool at the old Presidential Lodge in Lafia, alongside other indoor sports facilities.
Yakubu added that the Lafia City Stadium has already been renovated to meet required standards, praising the governor’s commitment to sports development in the state.
