Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC have decided to file an official complaint against Senegalese referee Issa Sy following their 1-0 defeat to Espérance Sportive de Tunis in the first leg of their CAF Champions League tie in Tunisia.
The match was decided in the 73rd minute when Algerian defender Mohamed Amine Tougai converted a penalty to hand Esperance the advantage.
Al Ahly believe the referee made serious mistakes during the game, including failing to award what they consider a clear penalty in their favour. The Egyptian club also claimed the officiating affected the outcome of the encounter.
The controversy continued after the final whistle. According to reports surrounding the incident, Issa Sy stood holding a red card and appeared ready to sanction any Al Ahly player or official who approached him following the match.
Al Ahly officials have now decided to escalate the matter by submitting an official complaint to the Confederation of African Football, questioning the referee’s decisions during the high stakes continental clash.
The first leg result leaves Esperance with a narrow advantage heading into the return leg, while Al Ahly will hope to overturn the deficit and progress in the competition.
