Nasarawa United suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat against Remo Stars at the Ikenne Stadium on Sunday, despite playing most of the match with ten men.
The Solid Miners were reduced to ten players in the 38th minute when Umar Ada was sent off for a second yellow card. Remo Stars took advantage in the 63rd minute after goalkeeper Darlintin Ovunda failed to hold a corner, allowing Stanley Joseph to score from close range.
Nasarawa United fought back and equalised in the 83rd minute through teenage substitute Suleiman Dauda, marking his first league goal of the season. However, former Solid Miners’ forward Michael Ibeh scored a stoppage-time winner in the 89th minute to seal the victory for the hosts.
Despite the defeat, Nasarawa United remain third in the league with 47 points, 14 ahead of Remo Stars, who sit 19th.
Coach Mangut Mbwas praised his side’s resilience, stating, "I am not really disappointed because we played almost the entire game with a man down, pulled a leveler before conceding at the stroke of regulation time. I give credit to my boys for their bravery and resilience. We have our next game against top-of-the-table Rivers United next weekend at our home ground. We hope to recover from today’s defeat. All hope isn't lost yet as the table is still open with eight matches left."
Nasarawa State dignitaries, including Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Hon. Kwanta Yakubu and Chief Whip of the State House of Assembly Hon. Larry Ven-Bawa, were present to support the team.
