Bendel Insurance have been sanctioned by the Nigeria Premier Football League following multiple breaches during their Matchday 32 fixture against Plateau United at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
The league body found the club guilty of failing to provide adequate and effective security, which allowed unauthorised individuals access to restricted areas during the match.
Supporters of the Benin City side were also cited for unsporting behaviour capable of bringing the game into disrepute. The situation escalated further as fans harassed match officials.
The NPFL also ruled that Bendel Insurance supporters acted improperly by holding match officials hostage for 40 minutes after the game.
Head coach Kennedy Boboye was not spared, as he was charged with gross misconduct towards a match official, a breach of the league’s principles of fair play and discipline.
As part of the sanctions, Bendel Insurance were fined ₦2 million for inadequate security and ₦1 million for supporter misconduct. The club received an additional ₦2 million fine for the incident involving match officials.
Boboye has been fined ₦2 million and handed a 17-match suspension.
In addition, Bendel Insurance will play their next three home matches behind closed doors.
