The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has announced that a minute of silence will be observed before the start of all remaining Matchday 35 fixtures this weekend in honour of the late former President of the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), Otunba Tade Azeez.
Azeez passed away on Friday afternoon after a brief illness. One of the Matchday 35 fixtures between Kano Pillars and Rivers United had already been played before news of his death broke.
NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, confirmed the directive, stating: "We have directed that a minute silence be observed before the start of the remaining fixtures on Saturday and Sunday."
Azeez, a former FIFA-badged referee and ex-Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association (LAFA), was praised for his significant contributions to Nigerian football.
"We reckon with his contributions to the growth of the league and club football over the years," Owumi said. "We will miss his stabilising presence, especially during tricky fixtures."
Owumi extended condolences to Azeez's family, friends, and associates.
