Eric Chelle has marked a dream start to his reign as head coach of the Super Eagles, guiding Nigeria to the 2025 Unity Cup title with a dramatic 5–4 penalty shootout victory over Jamaica after a 2–2 draw in regulation time.
Speaking after the match, an elated Chelle reflected on the significance of the win.
“This is my first trophy as a coach. I hope to win more for Nigeria,” he said after the game at GTech Community Stadium in West London.
Chelle, appointed earlier this year, oversaw a composed Nigerian performance in a game that saw early dominance and late drama. Moses Simon opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 9th minute, converting from close range after a well-placed cross by Cyriel Dessers. Jamaica, however, fought back with Jon Russell leveling in the 63rd minute, setting the stage for a tense penalty shootout.
Nigeria displayed nerves of steel, converting all five of their spot-kicks. Jamaica’s Atkinson was the unfortunate culprit in the shootout, striking the crossbar with his effort—sealing the victory for Chelle’s men.
The Unity Cup featured four nations—Nigeria, Jamaica, Ghana, and Trinidad & Tobago—in a mini-tournament celebrating African and Caribbean football heritage. Nigeria defeated Ghana 2–1 in the semi-final, while Jamaica saw off Trinidad & Tobago 3–2. Ghana claimed third place earlier today with a 4–0 win over Trinidad & Tobago.
For Chelle, the Unity Cup triumph is more than just silverware—it’s a symbol of a new chapter.
“The boys showed great spirit and composure. I’m proud of them. This is just the beginning,” Chelle added.
With his first trophy already secured, Nigerian fans will be watching closely as Chelle embarks on what could be a promising era for the Super Eagles.
