Thirteen years after the death of Nigerian football legend Rashidi Yekini, Gateway United FC has joined fans and family in honoring the memory of the country’s all-time top scorer.
Yekini, who passed away on May 4, 2012, remains a towering figure in Nigerian football history, celebrated for his 37 goals for the Super Eagles and an inspiring career that spanned top clubs in Nigeria and Europe.
Reflecting on Yekini’s brief but memorable stint with Gateway United in 2005, Acting General Manager Niyi Soleye recalled his impact on and off the pitch.
“Yekini was not only a prolific goalscorer but also a gentleman. His presence lifted everyone—players and fans alike,” Soleye said. “It was a privilege to welcome a legend of his caliber.”
Yekini joined Gateway United in April 2005, alongside former national teammates Sani Abacha and Jude Edemba. He made 26 appearances and scored seven goals, leaving a lasting mark on the club.
The striker, who also starred for Shooting Stars, Abiola Babes, and clubs abroad, was known for his explosive style and sharp goal sense. He died under controversial circumstances and was buried in his hometown of Ira, Kwara State, at age 48.
Gateway United’s tribute serves as a reminder of Yekini’s enduring legacy—one that continues to inspire young footballers across Nigeria.
