Nigeria booked their place in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025 after defeating defending champions Senegal 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw at the Suez Canal Stadium on Monday.
Both sides battled through 120 minutes of intense quarter-final action without finding the net. Despite several chances, neither team could break the deadlock in regulation or extra time.
Nigeria held their nerve in the shootout, converting three of their penalties through Precious Benjamin, Emmanuel Chukwu, and Israel Ayuma. Senegal faltered, with Pierre Dorival’s kick saved, Mame Mor Faye denied, and Ousmane Konaté hitting the crossbar. Seydi Diouck netted Senegal’s only spot kick.
The result continues Nigeria’s perfect record in U20 AFCON quarter-finals under the current format, marking their eighth straight win at this stage. They now advance with eyes on an eighth continental title.
Kparobo Arierhi and Divine Oliseh had the best chances for Nigeria in open play, forcing key saves from Senegal’s Mouhamed Sissokho. Cheikh Thiam came closest for Senegal, heading against the post in the first half.
Nigeria’s tactical changes, including the introduction of Benjamin and Rickson Mendos, added energy in extra time. Tahir Maigana and Ayuma tested Sissokho again late on, but it remained scoreless.
Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt stepped up in the shootout with a crucial save against Mame Mor Faye, helping secure the win. Head coach Aliyu Zubairu praised his team’s composure: “We prepared for all scenarios, including penalties. I’m proud of the boys for executing under pressure.”
Senegal, who had not lost a knockout match since 2017, exit the tournament after a strong campaign. Nigeria move on, one win away from another U20 AFCON final.
